Avalon Bay Community, Saddle River

 

Situated on an idyllic wooded site on the outskirts of Saddle River, this Avalon community was designed to be a contemporary building rooted tastefully in its natural and historic context.
The residential wings of this building fan out into the leafy site to engage with the landscape and create a variety of both common and private outdoor courtyards. The varied mix of unit types are dispersed evenly through the building so that units of all types can avail of the differing aspects and views afforded by the site. 
Aesthetically, the challenge was to design a building that was both familiar in terms of its form and
materials yet unique and instantly recognizable. Pitched roofs, lap siding, hung windows and other
traditional features all ground the design in the vernacular while a subtle monochromatic color palette
with natural cedar accents sets it apart for the sea of earth tones around it.
